Pumiao Old Street, a historical and cultural block in Nanning City, has its origins dating back to the ninth year of Emperor Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty (1731), making it nearly 300 years old. It has served as a bustling commercial port in the ancient town. The distinctive arcade-style buildings, blending architectural elements with Lingnan style from the late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China, and modern times, form the heart of the commercial area where local people engage in business activities.
Pumiao started as a wharf and developed into a riverside market during the Qing Dynasty. By the time of the Republic of China, it had evolved into a circular arcade-style commercial street centered around Shengli Street and Hanlin Street. Presently, Yongning District is embracing temple fair and commercial port traditions, highlighting local delicacies such as fermented rice noodles and colorful glutinous rice, as well as cherished folk customs like the worship of the Five Saints and the traditional “Flower Lady” blessings. The district’s current focus is on urban design and revitalization in the Pumiao Old Street area, with the ambition to transform it into a Lingnan-style ancient commercial port that seamlessly integrates cultural heritage, distinctive characteristics, and functions for leisure tourism. Ultimately, it seeks to establish itself as a cultural hub showcasing the rich folk culture of Nanning.
