The skill of tying dragons by Zhuang people in Long’an County, Nanning is unique in the territory of the Zhuang ethnic group, and straw dragon is its representative work. Zhuang people express their infinite respect for the “Dragon God” through straw dragon dancing, hoping that it will bring good weather and bumper harvest. The rice civilization system represented by straw dragon in Long’an County successfully became an intangible heritage of Nanning in 2015 through application.
In Long’an County, the whole straw dragon is made of straw, with the dragon head, body and tail decorated with colorful paintings, which appear vivid. Dragon dance activities are mainly held in local folk activities such as temple fairs on May 13 of the lunar calendar, “Offering Sacrifice to Rice God” on June 6 and during the Spring Festival every year. Before the straw dragon comes out, a venerable old man or inheritor of the straw dragon dips a writing brush in cinnabar to make the finishing touch, and then people begin to perform. The prepared straw dragon consists of a dragon head, a dragon tail and seven dragon bodies, all of which are unfolded up to 25 meters long, and it takes 10 people to dance with it.
