Longan is also known as “Guiyuan”. With its crystal-like flesh, it tastes tender and sweet, by no means inferior to litchi. A poem by Su Dongpo, a renowned poet in the Song Dynasty, describes it like this: “Two similar varieties are longan and litchi. Coming from the same origin, they look as alike as orange and tangerine. To say which of them is better is not easy.” It can be consumed fresh or be made into canned fruit or dried Guiyuan and dried longan, which is a good tonic.
