Originated in the Jurassic Period of the Mesozoic Era, Cycas is an endangered gymnosperm and known as “living fossil”. At present there are three families, 11 species and more than 240 varieties of cycas known in the world, distributing in the tropical and subtropical areas of Asia, Africa, Oceania and America. China has only one family, one species and about 25 varieties, distributing in provinces such as Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, etc. Among them, eight to ten varieties are distributed in Guangxi. All the varieties of cycas in China were listed under first rate state protection by Ministry of Forestry in 1996. Located at the western foot of Phoenix Ridge in Qingxiu Mountain Resort, the Cycas Garden was basically accomplished and opened to public in Nov. 1998, covering an area of 2.67 hectares and collecting 16 varieties. The garden enjoys a population advantage with its relatively large-scale cycas pectinata, cycas miquelii, and cycas micholitzii. Being the largest cycas garden in China, the garden is becoming a preservation center of the cycas resources in Guangxi, helpful to the research, development and preservation of the cycas in China, especially in Guangxi.
