On behalf of the Nanning People’s Government and its citizens, I would like to express our hope that this “virtual” meeting can be followed soon with a “real” meeting in Nanning, the “Green City” of China, whether you travel here for a vacation, on business, or to seek  investment opportunities.

Nanning, the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is the political, economic, cultural, financial, and information center of the Region. It is a city full of cultural distinctiveness, economic vitality, and an expanding openness to and involvement with the global community.  As evidence of Nanning’s development, we are proud to say that we have received many awards, including membership in “Top 50 Comprehensive Power Cities in China” and “Top Tourist Cities in China”, in addition to being designated as a “China Hygiene Model City”, the “Dubai International Award for the Best Practices to Improve Living Conditions” and the recipient of "Habitat Scroll of Honour Award" in 2007.

In particular, Nanning is famous the world over for its traditional and contemporary folks songs.  The Annual Nanning International Folk Songs Festival in fall attracts wide-spread attention by combining the talents of musical headliners from the across the globe with a special blend of centuries-old folk song traditions, many “undiscovered” tourist attractions, and an ever-expanding economic trade.

Beginning in 2004, Nanning will host the annual China-ASEAN Expo sponsored by China and the ten ASEAN member states, at which China and ten of its Southeast Asian neighbors will offer a rich mixture of business opportunities, cultural experiences, and tourism attractions.

Nanning’s favorable location makes it well-suited to be an important center for travel.  To the north is Guilin, where a unique combination of clear water and green hills makes the area a world-famous scenic spot. To the south are the Silver and Golden Beaches of the Beibu Gulf. On the west, one can visit the mysterious Huashan Cliff paintings and the Detian Cross-border Waterfall, the second largest transnational waterfall in the world. On the east, the Guiping West Mountains harbor some of the oldest Buddhist institutions and artifacts in all of South China. Within the city there are ten scenic spots such as Yangmei Ancient Town, Green Mountain Tower, and colorful ethnic customs.
