Yangon, built in 1755, was the capital of Myanmar before 2005 and has a permanent population of 5 million. It means the "End of the War" literally in Burmese and has the reputation of "Peaceful City". Located in Myanmar's most fertile Irrawaddy River Delta, Yangon is a beautiful coastal city with tropical scenery. The city is home to both traditional Burmese style and many Western-style buildings. There are YinYa Lake and Kandawgyi Lake in the city. With regular flights from Kunming, Guangzhou, Bangkok and Singapore to Yangon, foreign tourists may fly to the nation through Yangon International Airport, which also connects domestic tourist destinations.
Mandalay, named as “Wacheng” by the Chinese in Myanmar, is the capital of Mandalay Province, and economic and cultural center of the northern region. Located on the east bank of Irrawaddy River, it is well connected to other important cities, such as Yangon and Naypyitaw through waterways, highways, railways and an international airport. Therefore, it becomes a collecting and distributing center for goods and the largest inland transportation hub in Myanmar. As one of the most famous ancient cities and Buddhist holy places in Myanmar, it boasts of many places of interest and scenic spots, for example, the 260-meter-high Mandalay Mountain on its outskirt. Streets in the city are neatly arranged in a shape like Chinese character “井”, and are often named by numbers.
Naypyitaw, capital of Myanmar, is located in center of Myanmar geographically, being about 400 kilometers south of Yangon and 350 kilometers north of Mandalay. Myanmar government moved its capital from Yangon on November 6, 2005, to it, and named it “Naypyitaw”, referring to the “Capital”. The city is now home to federal government, parliament and military headquarters, with a permanent population of approximately 900,000. In recent years, Myanmar government has been contriving a construction plan for the city, and its urban construction begins to take shape, regardless of less developed supporting facilities in medical care and education. At present, flights to other cities of the nation and some foreign cities, like Kunming and Bangkok are available.
