How will I find my way around and/or buy the things I need?
No problem. Most schools will assign another teacher or an assistant to you, to help you do the things you need to do until you learn the basics. After you live and work in China a while, you will find yourself quite skilled at finding what you need, using either very basic language or even just gestures. After all, you will most likely NOT be your school's first foreign teacher and they will probably be familiar with most of your wants and needs - from finding food you are familiar with, to cold remedies, Internet cafes, or even good restaurants.
What will my accommodation be like?
SAFEARegulations stipulate that during your entire contractual period in China, you shall be provided rent-free a fully furnished apartment of similar standard to a 3 Star Hotel. Usually the apartment will be on campus and include one bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom/ toilet, etc. Do not expect too much and you will not be disappointed.
What are the restrictions on baggage and hand luggage?
The weight restriction on an economy class ticket is 20 – 25kg. You should check your ticket or consult with our travel agent. 20kg would generally be a full 100litre Rucksack. You can also bring one piece of hand luggage so you may want to put more delicate or heavy items in it. If you’re bringing a laptop, that’s usually fine, and not counted as your one piece of allowable hand luggage.
What happens if I get sick?
Basic health care is provided by the clinic or hospital nominated by the school and they will usually ensure you are covered for the costs of unexpected medical expenses should you suddenly take ill or have an accident. If you require comprehensive insurance, we suggest you take out private cover before leaving home.
Who pays for my airfare to China?
This is the subject that causes the most arguments, it is also the thing that has been most abused by foreign teachers in the past who have enjoyed holidays to or from China, or demanded the face value on the ticket. It is also the most expensive item for the school. Please be sensible when buying your ticket; economy class by the most direct route will rarely be challenged. You ONLY get round trip reimbursement if you contract for two terms. Schools often use the reimbursement to ensure you stay for the contract period.
If I live off campus, how do I get to work?
Should your accommodation be provided off campus and be in excess of ten minutes walking distance from the school, your school will usually subsidize public transport. In most instances your accommodation will be provided on campus.
How about Chinese people’s living standard?
Chinese people’s living standard has improved so much since its opening and reform, however, the overall is lower than western developed countries’. If you want to have Chinese dinning at low expense but good taste, restaurant will be your good choice.
In China, which city is better to teach in?
As a rule, cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen have so large number of foreign teachers, comparatively, they offer higher pay but higher living standard that cannot be neglected, which is as the saying goes- every coin has its two sides. So it’s up to you to choose whichever city; if you prefer bustling with noise and excitement, you may choose Beijing and Shanghai, if you like beautiful city to teach in, cities such as Dalian and Changchun will be your good choices, also, whenever you want to know Chinese Universities, Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan etc. will be your destinations.
May l open a bank account in China?
Of course, you can. In China, foreigners enjoy equal rights as the Chinese citizens do. You may also open your banking account and don’t forget bringing your passport then.
What is the shortest term of a contract available?
The minimum term for a contract in China is one semester (5 to 6 month period). Schools are generally not willing to offer shorter term contracts because of visa processing times and staff turnover levels.
When is the best time to apply?
The vast majority of teaching positions are available in February/March and August/Septemberasthese are the start of the school semesters in China. So you’d better do the application before that.
Is it possible to stay for longer than one semester or even two semesters?
Yes, it is possible to stay longer. Schools generally encourage teachers to extend their contract, as this benefits the school and students. You would most likely receive a higher salary upon resigning for your school. If you want to continue teaching in China but you wish a change of location, you may contact the objective unversity.
