Since the beginning of this year, Tanluo Town in Xixiangtang District has focused on restructuring industries and boosting pumpkin output and marketing, so as to ensure smooth agricultural production and increase of farmers' income.
Reportedly, Tanluo Town was ingenious at implementing the policy of "rewards for subsidies" for characteristic industries, and strengthened industrial support for pumpkin growing. At present, it has completed the acceptance of three batches of 830 poor households engaged in melon growing under the policy of "rewards for subsidies", involving a planting area of over 3,700 mu. In addition, led by Wei Xiangquan, a leader for making villagers rich, Fushu Village in Tanluo Town also introduced pumpkin deep processing industrial chains. With a drying technique, the pumpkins are made into pumpkin chips and sold to Southeast Asian nations. By now, Wei Xiangquan has bought 300,000 kg of pumpkins from 100 farmer households, and 10,000 kg of pumpkins roll off the processing line every day. He has also hired 20 villagers to work at the cooperatives, 6 from poor households, paying wages of 150 yuan to each person each day. This has greatly mitigated the overstock of pumpkins and created jobs for farmers.
