In recent years, Nanning City has actively advanced the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Notable progress has been made in preservation, utilization, and raising public awareness. Specifically, safeguarding methods have diversified, public awareness has grown, and systemic conservation and inheritance capabilities have been significantly strengthened.
A comprehensive protection and inheritance system has been established. Nanning City has implemented a four-tiered management system for ICH at the nation, autonomous region, city, and county (district) levels. By June 2024, the city has documented 280 ICH items at or above the municipal level, including 9 items at the national level and 184 items at the autonomous-region level. Furthermore, there are 5 ICH inheritors at the national level, 94 inheritors at the autonomous-region level, and 266 inheritors at the municipal level.
A series of distinctive ICH projects have been recognized. In 2023, 25 representative Nanning City-based ICH projects were included in the list of the ninth batch of the autonomous-region-level representative ICH projects. These projects cover a diverse range of categories, including folk literature, traditional dance, traditional narrative and performing arts, traditional sports and acrobatics, traditional craftsmanship, traditional medicine, and folk customs. Nanning City ranks first in Guangxi both in the number of newly recognized projects and the cumulative total.
A range of ICH brands under industrialized operation have been cultivated. Nanning City has actively supported the commercialization of ICH projects, including Zhuang Five-Colored Glutinous Rice, Binyang County Zhuang Brocade Weaving Technique, Nanning City Pottery Craft, Zhuang Embroidery, and Zhuang Huigu Drums. Brands, such as “Najia Yijin” and “Zhuangmeifang”, have emerged, transforming ICH resources into thriving industries.
