Hengzhou in Nanning, known as the "Hometown of Chinese Jasmine", is the source of more than 80% of the jasmine flowers and jasmine scented tea in China.
Hengzhou, located south of the Tropic of Cancer, enjoys a typical subtropical monsoon climate with abundant rainfall, sufficient light and heat, and fertile soil, which are all excellent growing conditions for the warmth-loving and cold-fearing jasmine flowers, and can extend the blooming period of jasmine flowers to half a year.
Since the Song Dynasty, jasmine scented tea has always been an important agricultural product exported overseas from China. Jasmine scented tea is a kind of reprocessed tea, which uses tea as the base, and through the scenting process, infuses the floral fragrance of fresh jasmine flowers into the tea leaves. When tasting the tea, no flowers are seen, yet the jasmine aroma spreads from the tip of the tongue. Ninety percent of the global jasmine scented tea is basically produced in China.
Xie Dagao, the inheritor of the "production technique of Hengxian’s jasmine scented tea", told the reporter that jasmine flowers bloom at night, and the best fragrance released when the flowers bloom is the most intense. To produce this kind of tea, before the flowers bloom, the large buds that have already turned white should be picked, and scented that night while they bloom.
In the 1980s, the production center of jasmine scented tea in China was in Fujian, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. In 1989, the national jasmine scented tea processing and sales symposium held in Hengzhou made Hengzhou Jasmine Scented Tea famous for the first time. The long blooming period, large buds, strong fragrance, and high yield of Hengzhou Jasmine Flowers have increasingly been recognized by the market. After that, the production center of jasmine scented tea in China gradually moved to this area. Tea merchants from various places flocked here, and jasmine scented tea processing enterprises sprang up like mushrooms after rain. Currently, Hengzhou has more than 130 jasmine scented tea enterprises. In 2023, the total output value of Hengzhou Jasmine Scented Tea was 16.29 billion yuan. Hengzhou Jasmine Flower (Scented Tea) has also been one of the most valuable agricultural product brands in Guangxi for many consecutive years.
In order to further serve the development of the jasmine industry, Hengzhou piloted a jasmine production digitalization project in the core area of the National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park. By implementing projects such as water and fertilizer integration, integrated pest and disease prevention and control, and monitoring, the blooming period of jasmine flowers under the standardized jasmine cultivation is extended by 40 days compared to that under the traditional cultivation, thereby helping flower farmers increase their income.
Hengzhou is also continuously improving and perfecting the production standard system for jasmine products, enhancing the standardized cultivation and processing levels of jasmine, and focusing on the comprehensive utilization of fresh jasmine flowers, flower residue, and flower stems. The development is expanding from the single processing of jasmine scented tea to derivative products such as jasmine essential oil, face masks, aromatherapy, sachets, and flower cakes.
By hosting the "World Jasmine Conference", Hengzhou has continuously enhanced the reputation of jasmine flowers and expanded the export scale. Xie Dagao said that his tea company began exporting jasmine scented tea to Japan at the end of 2019, and now exports about 500 tons to Japan annually. In addition, they also export to several Southeast Asian countries.
Hengzhou will use the Global Jasmine Distribution Center, the National Modern Agricultural Industrial Park, and the Chinese Jasmine Town as platforms to continue building the "gilded signboard" of Hengzhou Jasmine, further spreading the fragrance of jasmine from the hometown of jasmine to the whole world, introduced Meng Keyu.
