Brief Introduction to the 2004 CAEXPO

At the 7th China-ASEAN leaders¡¯ meeting on Oct. 8, 2003, Premier Wen Jiabao of the People's Republic of China proposed that the China-ASEAN Expo be held annually from 2004 in Nanning, Guangxi of the People's Republic of China. His proposal was well received by leaders of ASEAN member states and was included in the chairperson's statement of the meeting.
At the same meeting, Premier Wen Jiabao also proposed to hold the China-ASEAN Business & Investment Summit in China. The 1st Summit will be held in Nanning along with China-ASEAN Expo.

n November 2002, the leaders of China and the 10 ASEAN member countries signed the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Between ASEAN and China in Phnom Penh of Cambodia, which marked the beginning of the process to establish the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (CAFTA). From January 1 2004, over 500 kinds of agricultural products in the CAFTA start the tariff deduction, while the tariff of other products will also be reduced gradually each year.
Since 1995, the bilateral trade between China and ASEAN has increased by over 15% annually. In 2002, the trade volume hit USD54.77 billion, with an increase of 31.7% compared to that of the previous year. In 2003, it reached USD78.25 billion, an increase of 42.9% over that of 2002.
 
According to the consensus reached by the leaders of China and ASEAN member countries at the 7th China-ASEAN leaders¡¯ meeting, the bilateral trade between China and ASEAN will exceed USD100 billion by 2005.
A big market of over 1.7 billion consumers in CAFTA will create limitless business opportunities.
Purpose of CAEXPO
The purpose of CAEXPO is to promote the construction of CAFTA and share the opportunities of for cooperation and development.
 
Targets of CAEXPO
According to the Framework Agreement on Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Between ASEAN and China and on the basis of the actual process of the CAFTA construction, the CAEXPO, following the principle of mutual benefits and economic cooperation within CAFTA, will be open to the business circles of the whole world. CAEXPO will encourage both imports and exports, facilitate investment through appropriate introductions, and promote economic activity through a wide range of exhibits, forums, and cultural exchanges, thereby enhancing mutual advantages, deepening economic and trade cooperation, and eventually realizing the common prosperity for all CAFTA participants.
 
Events and Arrangements of the Expo
There are exhibition halls for the nations and for Commodities Trade in the area
For exhibition: Indoor area: 30,000m2 (with 2,000 standard booths)
Outdoor area: 26,000 m2
For conference: Various meeting rooms with a total of 4,800 m2 available floor space
National Halls
No.1~ No.3 Exhibition Halls: Total 13,300m2, with 810 booths.
 
Arrangement:
China and the ten ASEAN countries will set up individual National Halls, for which, the locations will be determined by drawing lots. Each National Halls will have an entrance, a reception area a display area etc., decorated with distinctive national features. No commodities shall be exhibited in National Halls (with the exception of tourist goods). Exhibition of commodities will be arranged in Commodities Trade Halls.
There are two sizes of rooms available for the National Halls: (1) 300m2, accommodating 28 standard booths; (2) 900m2, accommodating 70 standard booths. ASEAN countries may choose one of the sizes according to their respective needs. Special requirements can also be considered.
Contents:
1. Demonstration of National Image
Display of the development and achievements in different countries in their economy, society, sci-technology and culture demonstrated through a variety of means, including pictures, scripts, models and multi-media.
2. Investment Negotiation
Representatives of the governmental departments of investment and trading for the different countries;
Introduction to the policies and environment for investment and trading;
Distribution of investment information;
Facilitating networking for different projects
Providing agency services, including finance, insurance, law and investment promotion.
3. Tourism Cooperation
Introduction of tourist spots
Exhibition of tourist goods
Information on and invitation for participation in tourist development projects
Display of tourist products
Commodities Trade Halls
No.4~ No.9 Exhibition Halls: Total 16,580m2 available for up to1,020 booths.
Establishment:
1. Commodities Exhibition Hall for China & ASEAN
Exhibition of same-category commodities of a country will be relatively concentrated.
Exhibition areas will be set up for such items as machinery, cars, electronics, minerals, chemicals, medical and health products, foodstuffs, native produce, animal by-products, light industry products and textiles.
2. Comprehensive Hall
Exhibition area for transnational companies and enterprises that come from the countries outside of the CAFTA
Contents:
Exhibition of profitable products: Mainly for the advantageous products for trading produced by China and ASEAN countries.
Facilitating business project networking: There will online connection to and support for a database of 410,000 global buyers provided by Chinese Ministry of Commerce and a database of 600,000 global buyers provided by Hong Kong Trade Development Council; services by the website of China-ASEAN.
 
Top-Level Forum
In Nanning International Convention & Exhibition Center
China-ASEAN Business & Investment Summit conducted at the same time as the Expo.
Government officials, experts and scholars, chambers of commerce, chairpersons of organizations as well as CEOs of leading enterprises will be invited to give speeches and conduct dialogues and exchanges.
Cultural Exchanges
During the Expo, Nanning International Folk Songs Arts Festival, Evening of Southeast Asian Cultures, and Concert of "Singing the Same Song" will be held to display cultures of various countries.

Application for CAEXPO
Applicants are required to complete the Application Form for Exhibition in China-ASEAN Expo and mail it to the Secretariat of China-ASEAN Expo. Booths will be arranged after the applications have been confirmed by the Secretariat. The deadline for application is July 15, 2004.
Application Form for Exhibition in China-ASEAN Expo is available directly from the Secretariat of China-ASEAN Expo upon demand or downloading from www.caexpo.org. Copied forms will be accepted.
Exhibitors are required to conform to the general arrangement by the Expo¡¯s organizers and abide by relevant regulations of the Expo.
