In the language of Shui people, Duan Festival is called jie-duan, while jie means eating and duan means the beginning of the New Year. Duan Festival is set on Sep 9th Lunar calendar, and is generally called Shuinian Festival (New Year¡¯s Days of Shui People). The Yi people who live dispersedly sometimes celebrate Duan Festival on certain day depending on the district where people live.
Duan Festival is the traditional festival for the Shui people to ring out the old year and welcome the new, to worship their ancestors and celebrate and harvest as well as to wish the New Year to be full of happiness. The Shui people living in Nandan, Huanjiang, Hechi, Yizhou, Rongshui districts of Guangxi have a long tradition of celebrating Duan Festival.
